Dacha is

Since the 18th century, Russian people have rescued themselves from the suffocating city summer by going to their dachas – country houses where the whole family went for a few months every year, while only the poor father of the family had to travel back and forth to the city for work. Unlike in other countries, Russian dacha is not a sign of luxury but a special tradition. It may be a trace of childhood memory like playing ball late into evening by grace of a sun that won’t set, gathering pinecones to perfume the samovar fire, or swimming in an icy pond rimmed by the green spires of spruce.

The word dacha can mean either a house outside the city which belongs to the family, and which is used primarily for summer vacation, or a space (usually part of a house, such as two rooms and an enclosed porch) which is rented for the summer months from the permanent residents of a rural community.

Russian dwelling. Alexander Pushkin summered in one; Joseph Stalin lived in one for the last twenty years of his life; and contemporary Russian families still escape the city to spend time in them. Russian concept. No European language has an equivalent for it. Ilya Alter and Dmitri Chekaldin first opened Dacha Beer Garden at the corner of 7th and Q Street NW in September 2013 realizing their own American Dream.
